Poker Strategy: Common Beginner Mistakes

Now when playing poker there are many strategies that have been devised to win and make lots of money. But to get to a level of play that is consistent and strong, you first have to learn how not to beat yourself.

Playing Too Many Hands

Often times, new players end up playing too many hands. When players sit down in a game, they obviously want to play. This often means that they will even play hands like a J and a 4. This is a cardinal no no. Hopefully, with enough play under your belt you will help improve your starting hand selection.

Do Not Play Above Yourself

This goes without saying, never play above your bankroll. Sometimes the money aspect of poker can get to people too quickly. They then become greedy and play in games they cannot afford or games where the competition is simply too stiff and sometimes will force themselves into playing a hand that cannot possibly be won because the stakes are high and they want to win.

Stick to a consistent, lower limit; learn how to play and beat the game before you play in the higher stakes games.

Becoming Emotional

Bad cards will happen. Losing sessions will happen. Annoying opponents will happen. Go with the flow and do not let your emotions blur your judgment while cards are on the table.

Etiquette

Not following etiquette is a mistake that most beginners will make. When you want to make a raise, you should not say, I call and raise you X amount of dollars. The initial action undertook is considered the final action. So if you were to say, I call ... it would mean you just want to call, but if you want to raise, announce raise and state the amount you want to raise. It takes time, and everyone makes mistakes, so learn quickly and continue to play the game.
